The app never updates, or I cannot tell which version I have
If you have been waiting for Vesari Stylus to offer you a new version and nothing has ever appeared, nothing is broken and there is nothing to diagnose.
The short answer
Automatic in-app updating is not switched on yet. No update will arrive on its own, however long you leave it. New versions are installed by downloading the current installer and running it over the top of the one you have, which takes about a minute and leaves your library and settings alone.

Why the app stays silent about it
A release build does ask whether a newer version exists each time it starts. With nothing yet answering that question, the check simply finds nothing and says nothing.
That silence is deliberate. An app that cannot reach an update service should not interrupt you to say so, and a failed check looks identical to "you are already current" from the outside. The cost is exactly the situation this page exists for: you cannot tell the difference between up to date and not checking.
Finding your version
The version sits at the bottom of the navigation rail on the left, below Settings, as v0.2.26 or similar.
Seeing only icons means the rail is collapsed. Click the chevron at its top, or press Ctrl+B, and the version appears beneath the expanded list.
Checking whether you are behind
Compare that number with the version offered on the download page. They use the same form, so 0.2.26 against 0.2.28 tells you plainly that two releases have gone by.
If you are behind, run the current installer. You do not need to uninstall first, and nothing in your library is touched.
Tester builds never update themselves
A tester build will not move itself onto the public release channel, deliberately. Tester builds carry changes that have not been through a full release, and swapping one for a public version automatically would make it impossible to know what anyone is running. If you are testing, the next tester build is how you move forward.
When automatic updates do arrive
The app will tell you a new version is available, fetch it in the background, and restart into it. You will not have to visit a download page, and your library, playlists, tags and settings carry across untouched, exactly as they do with a manual install today.
Until then, checking the download page now and again is the only way to know, and this page will be updated when that changes.
