Updating Vesari Stylus
New versions arrive as a fresh installer that you run over the top of the one you have. It takes about a minute, and it leaves your library, playlists and settings exactly as they were.
How to update
- Download the current installer.
- Run it. You do not need to uninstall the version you have first.
- Open Vesari Stylus again.
That is the whole process. The installer replaces the program itself and nothing else, so your library, playlists, listening history, ratings, tags and settings all survive untouched. They live in a separate folder that the installer never opens. See Where Vesari Stylus keeps your files and settings if you want the detail.
Checking which version you have
The version sits at the very bottom of the navigation rail down the left, below Settings, in the form v0.2.26.
If all you can see there are icons, the rail is collapsed. Click the chevron at the top of it, or press Ctrl+B, and the version appears under the expanded list.
Quote that number in any bug report. It is the single most useful thing you can tell us, because it says exactly which build you are describing.
Automatic updates
Vesari Stylus is built to update itself, and a release build asks whether a newer version exists each time it starts. That check is one of the small number of things the app does over the internet, so it is worth knowing it happens.
Automatic in-app updating is not switched on yet. The check runs, finds nothing to talk to, and stays quiet, which is deliberate: an app that cannot reach an update service should not nag you about it. Until it is live, the installer above is how you move to a new version.
When it does switch on, the app will offer the update itself, download it in the background and restart into the new version. Nothing about your library changes when that happens either.
A note on tester builds
If you are running a tester build, it will never update itself onto the public release channel, by design. A tester build carries changes that have not been through a full release, and quietly swapping it for a public version, or the other way round, would make it impossible to know what anyone is actually running. Tester builds are updated by installing the next tester build.
Nothing is taken away by updating
Updating does not change what your licence entitles you to, and it never affects playback. Your whole library plays on every tier, forever, and a new version does not alter that. If you are on Free, you stay on Free with the same allowances; if you have bought a licence, it carries across. If an update will not install
Close Vesari Stylus completely before running the installer. If the installer reports that files are in use, check that the app is not still running in the background, then try again.
